Obituary:
Funeral services for Cynthia (Cyndee) M. Winton, 67, of Leslie Road, Massena, will be Friday January 22, 2010 at 10:00 am at St. Mary’s Church in Massena. Friends and family may call on Thursday from 6-8pm at the Phillips Memorial Home, 64 Andrews St. Massena. Cyndee died of pneumonia on January 15, 2010 at Fletcher Allen Health Care Center, Burlington, Vt. Born Cynthia Ann Murphy, the only daughter of Oral (Buck) and Mamie Murphy, she was raised on Ames Street, Massena. Being raised with three brothers rubbed off on her and she became the toughest kid, her age, on the street. That toughness was to stand her in good stead in later life. From a cute kid, to a pretty girl, a gorgeous woman and ultimately a beautiful and gracious lady, Cyndee, as she preferred to be called, moved easily through St. Mary’s Catholic School in Massena, to Massena High School and then on to Grace Downs’ Modeling and Business School in New York City. There she had an early and successful career as a professional model and dancer. She married a local Massena man, Phillip Mittiga and moved with him to Georgia. The marriage was sadly dissolved and Cyndee eventually married a Georgia businessman, James Winton. That marriage produced happy years and a son, Christian James Winton, currently a businessman in Ga. where be resides with his wife Amy. Cyndee was a long time cancer survivor dating from her life in Ga. For many years she served as a volunteer cancer counselor and consoler and did so up to her death. On her return to Massena she was employed at Slavin’s of Massena until that store closed. Following that she undertook private health care and was so employed until her death. As with everything she did, she ministered to patients with an attitude that went beyond professionalism, and included genuine caring. Cyndee was a sensitive, loving woman, with an inner faith and toughness that people rarely saw because of her puckish sense of humor, and her ready feistiness Those who were fortunate to know her would readily agree. She will be remembered, treasured and cherished by us all. Cyndee is survived by her son, Christian James Winton and his wife Amy, of Georgia, three brothers William Oral Murphy of Medway Ohio, Patrick James Murphy and wife Willa of Massena, and Timothy John Murphy and wife Patricia of Peekskill NY, a loving friend, Robert Violi of Massena, a friend and confidant, Cathy Davis of Massena, 2 nieces Misty Frank, of Ohio, Loreen Murphy of Winthrop, and 4 nephews James and Bryan Murphy and wife Patricia of Massena, Sean and Darryn Murphy of Ohio. She was a special Aunt to Robin Taylor and Edward Johnston of Massena, and Marty Johnston and wife Daniel of Swanton, Vt. and numerous cousins including Thomas Spaulding and wife Angie, and Sister Loreen Spaulding, SSND, Rob and CathyJo Brown, Fred, Rick and Debbie Murphy. Also missing her presence and love will be her great nieces and nephews including Megan and Bonnie Anderson, Sean Magnus Murphy, Madeline Taylor, and Liam, Bienoit, Rylee and Haley Johnston.
