Markes, 88 of Amherst Road, Massena, will be Thursday December 31, 2009 at 1:00 pm at the Church of the Sacred Heart in Massena. Friends are invited to call on Wednesday from 2-4 & 7-9 pm at the Phillips Memorial Home, 64 Andrews St. Massena. Interment will be Calvary Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to the Church of the Sacred Heart in Rita's memory. Rita passed away at her home on December 28, 2009. Rita is survived by a daughter Dianna and George Gonyea of Norfolk and two sons James E. Markes of Massena and Robert P. Markes of Syracuse. Seven grandchildren and several great grandchildren. Born on August 10, 1921 in Massena, NY the daughter of Henry and Jennie (Lareech) St. Thomas. Rita married Leon E. Markes on June 1, 1943 at the Chruch of the sacred Heart with the Rev. Msgr. Timothy P. Holland. She was prededeased by her parents, husband her brother James St. Thomas and a son Carl Markes, two grandsons, Thomas Plourde in 2006 and Paul M. Markes at birth. Rita loved spending time with her family and grandchildren. She lived to be a homemaker, good mother and enjoyed being with her family especially on Christmas. She loved to go for coffee and lunch with her granddaughter, and looked forward to going for rides after she became homebound.
