Irene E. Roberts

Irene E. Roberts, 86, a long-time resident of 21 Kennedy Ct. in Massena, died May 15 at the Epsom HealthCare Center in Epsom, N.H., where she had lived the last year. 

Calling hours at Phillips Memorial Home, 64 Andrews St., will be on Sunday, May 4, from 2:00 to 4:00 and 7:00 to 9:00 p.m.  A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Mary’s Church at 11:00 a.m. on Monday.  Interment will be at St. Mary’s Cemetery in Champlain, N.Y.

A Clinton County native, Irene graduated from St. Mary’s Academy in Champlain, NY. She and Don moved their family from Champlain to Massena in July 1956, after his promotion to Immigration Inspector at Rooseveltown.

She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Donald and Patricia, of Chichester, N.H., her son Kent and his partner, Joseph Samoyedna, of Brooklyn, and her daughter and son-in-law, Lynn and Howard Bastedo, of Gray, Tenn.  She is also survived by two granddaughters, Karyl Martin and her husband Andrew of Concord, N.H., and Lori Roberts of Reston, Va., two great-grandsons, Willis and Lucas Martin of Concord, as well as by four of her seven siblings and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was a dedicated homemaker and a member of St. Mary’s Church in Massena.  Her husband, Donald, predeceased her in 1999.

Elizabeth "Betty" M. Terry

There will be no public funeral services or calling hours for Elizabeth "Betty" M. Terry, 82, of 201 Centennial Terrace Ogdensburg, NY. Burial will be at the convenience of the family.

Mrs. Terry passed away on Thursday (May 15, 2008), at Claxton-Hepburn Medical Center in Ogdensburg, NY.

Betty is survived by a daughter and son, Harold and wife Valerie of Massena, Pauline Nieves of Canton, NY. A brother James MacCue of Oswegatchie, NY, two nieces, Rita Gladle of Cortland, Pearl Delaire of Gouverneur, . Five grandchildren, 10 great grandchildren, and two great great grandchildren.

She was predeceased by a son James in. 1967.

Mrs. Terry was born December 13, 1925 in Brownville, NY, the daughter of James and Pearl (Bennett) MacCue.

She married Harold Terry at the Church of the Sacred Heart with the Rev. Harold Skelly. The marriage ended in divorce.

She was employed at the Newton Falls Hotel for many years as a waitress-chamber maid for the past twenty years.

She resided in Ogdensburg at Centennial Terrace. She enjoyed playing cards, fishing.

Knar (Clara) Almasian

Memorial Services for Knar (Clara) Almasian will be held on Tuesday, May 20, 2008 at 4:00 p.m. in the St. John's Episcopal Church, Massena, NY. Rev. Joel Grigg officiating. Friends are invited to call at the St. John's Episcopal Church on Tuesday, May 20, 2008 from 2:00 to 4:00PM. Memorial Service will follow at 4:00PM.

Knar (Clara) Almasian passed away Friday, May 16, 2008.

She is survived by her loving husband of 58 years, Varoujan Almasian; her son, Michael Almasian, his wife, Alison, and their children, Sosie, Taline, and Jackson, all of Massena; and a sister, Sosie Hublitz, of Boca Raton, Florida. Sister, Roxy Kerkorian, Massena, passed away in 1985. Also surviving are nieces Laura (Almasian) Marlow, Roxann (Kerkorian) Lahcanski, and Sosie Hublitz; and nephews Jeffrey Almasian, Bryan Almasian, Vaughn Kerkorian, and Marty Hublitz; and many grand nieces and grand nephews.
 

She was married to Varoujan Almasian in St. John's Episcopal Church, Massena, on April 8, 1950.

Knar graduated from Massena High School in 1943 and immediately started to work for Alcoa as a secretary. She worked there for 31 years in various capacities. She retired in 1974. In her youth she was a nurse's aid during World War II. She enjoyed traveling extensively including Armenia, Hawaii, South America, Mexico and throughout Europe several times.

She was a member of the St. John's Episcopal Church, Massena, all of her life and volunteered her services to the church including the thrift shop, cabbage roll sales, and many other fundraisers and activities. She was instrumental in raising funds for and assisting the design of then tapestry in St. John's commemorating the Armenian Genocide at the hands of the Turks.

She was very active in the Armenian Community Center, Massena. She enjoyed allaspects of gardening, Armenian cuisine, music, dancing, and culture and was a singularly excellent cook and entertainer. Her name, Knar, means "harp" in Armenian.

Peggy R. MacArthur

A memorial service to celebrate and honor the life of Peggy Ryan MacArthur will be held at 11:00 am on Saturday, May 31, 2008 at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Waddington. 

Peg perished in a house fire on January 20, 2008.

Born December 28, 1958 in Ogdensburg. 

Peg was the daughter of Harold and Mary Ryan of Waddington.

She is also survived by her siblings, Ann Harris of Orleans, MA, Barbara Clickner of Atlanta, GA, and Elizabeth Salvagno of Syracuse, and Richard, Thomas and Robert all of Waddington .

Peg leaves several loving nieces and nephews including the recent additional of a great nephew as well as many aunts, uncles, and cousins. 

Peg will be remembered as a kind and generous soul, loving and faithful to her family and friends.

Her love for animals and all living things was a hallmark of her life. She was considered by those who knew her to be a "walking encyclopedia" of bird and plant knowledge.  An artist, Peg was talented in many areas but particularly in stained glass.

Peg is and will forever be deeply missed.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Phillips Memorial Home in Waddington.

Cecilia O. Smith

 

Funeral services for Cecilia O. Smith, age 88, of 146 E. Orvis Massena, NY will be held Saturday May 24, 2008 at 10:00 AM at the Church of the Sacred Heart in Massena.  Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery in Massena.

Calling hours will be held Friday from 2-4 & 7-9 PM at the Phillips Memorial Home in Massena.

Mrs. Smith passed away on Wednesday (May 21, 2008), at Massena Memorial Hospital in Massena, NY.

She is survived by her children, Frances O'Brien of Albany, N.Y., James Woodrow Smith of Brookline, Mass. and Patrick Smith of Massena, N.Y. Two grandchildren, Tiffany O'Brien of Massena, NY, and Patrick Smith Jr. of Massena. Sisters, Rhea Geoffrion of Cornwall, Ont, Lorraine LeRoux of Massena, N.Y., Anita Murray of Massena, N.Y., Lilian LeCompte of Ottawa, Ont., Noella Bazinet of Cornwall, Ont.Several nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by a brother Edgar Payette in 1973 and her husband Woodrow Smith in 1995.

Born September 30, 1919 in Cornwall, Ontario,  the daughter of Armand and Vanetta (Payette) Payette. Together she and her husband owned and operated Woody's General Store. She enjoyed shopping and cooking. She will always be remember for her generous spirit and kind soul, she was always jolly and happy all time. She loved to play cards, especially, Euchre. 

She was a member of Sacred Heart Church. She will be greatly missed by all who knew her.

Elizabeth "Libby" O. Mayette

Funeral services for Elizabeth "Libby" O. Mayette,  89, of 113 Hamilton Gardens Waddington, NY will be held Sunday May 25, 2008 at 4:30 PM at St. Pauls Episcopal Church  in Waddington, with Rev. Craig Hacker presiding. Burial will be in Brookside Cemetery in Waddington.

Mrs. Mayette passed away Thursday (May 22, 2008), at Claxton-Hepburn Medical Center in Ogdensburg, NY.

She is survived byher sons, Robert Mayette, Jr. of Waddington., Doug and wife Beverly Mayette of Wingdale, N.Y., grandchildren, Sherry & Daniel Etgen of Lakeland, FL. Julie Mayette of Richfield, Conn, Amy and David Rivera of Waddington, NY, Kirk and Lisa Mayette of Chase Mills, NY, Mark Mayette of Waddington, NY, Matt and Kelly Mayette of Waddington, NY, Krista and Ian Rutherford of Port Orange, Fl. Melissa Mayette of Wingdale, NY, Lisa and Tom Odiernoof Windale, NY. 13 great grandchildren. Sisters Beatrice and Robert Fraser of Potsdam, Gertrude James of West Haverstraw, NY, a sister in-law Isabelle Oshier of Waddington.  Several nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased sisters, Helen Fetterly, Margaret Donnie and a brother, Joseph "Cracker" Oshier.  She was predeceased by her husband, Robert Mayette, Sr., a son Gene Mayette, and a daughter Sheila Mayette.

Libby was born April 29, 1919 in Waddington, NY, the daughter of William "Pete" and Gertrude (Cunningham) Oshier.

She worked as a caregiver for over 20 years for the New York State  Family Care Home, where she took care of patients ather home.

She enjoyed baking, and walking thru the gardens with her friends at the  Hamilton Gardens, but most importantly enjoyed the time she spent with her children and grandchildren.

George J. Haley

Memorial services for George J. Haley, 73, of 55 South Main St. Norwood, NY will be held June 10, 2008 at 12:05 PM at the Church of the Sacred Heart in Massena.

There will be no public calling hours. Burial will be at the convenience of the family.

Mr. Haley died Thursday (May 22, 2008), at Fletcher Allen Health Care in Burlington, VT.

He is survived by a sister and brothers, Mary and her husband Bert Sullivan of Louisville, N.Y. Jack and Gloria Haley of Norwood, N.Y.  Pat and Sherrie Haley of Norfolk, N.Y., Richard Haley of Norwood, N.Y. Several nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by his parents, Dr. George and Cora Haley, a sister Betty Haley Gabri and nieces May Lynn Schwartzkopf, and Debra Gabri.

Born December 23, 1934 in Massena, NY, the son of George and Cora (Thebert) Haley.

He earned his Bachelor's Degree at Hobart's and received his Masters' Degree in English from Potsdam State. He taught for St. Lawrence Central until his retirement. He previously taught in India for six years.

George enjoyed cooking for his family and friends especially making his Taco salad. He also enjoyed listening to classical music.

John "Jack" B. Smith

Funeral services for John "Jack" B. Smith, 76, of 241 Andrews St. Massena, NY will be held Tuesday evening at 8 :00 Pm at the Phillips Memorial Home with Rev Donald J. Manfred officiating. Interment will be in St Patrick's Cemetery, Brasher Falls.

Calling hours will be held Tuesday from 2-4 and 7 until the time of the funeral at 8:00 pm at Phillips Memorial Home, Massena, N.Y.

Mr. Smith died Friday evening (May 23, 2008), at Massena Memorial Hospital in Massena, NY. where he had been a patient since May 19. He had been in failing health for the past year.

Surviving John "Jack" B. Smith is his wife of 54 yrs. Jean, two sons: Stephen and his wife Sandra of Los Altos, CA, Michael of Atlanta, GE, three grandaughters; Sarah Smith of OK, Payton and Reagan Smith both of CA. He was predeceased by two sons: Gary and Jeffrey Smith.

John " Jack" B. Smith was born December 11, 1931 in Plattsburgh the son of John B. and Florence (Sullivan ) Smith Sr.

A graduate of St John's Academy in Plattsburgh, he later attended Plattsburgh State until he entered the US Army during the Korean War Conflict. Following his Honorable Discharge in 1954 he returned to college at Potsdam State earning his Bachelor's and Masters in Mathematics. He started his teaching career at Massena Central while also coaching basketball at St Lawrence Central where he later transferred . He taught a total of 33 years all together in Brasher. The last 10 years he was the Principal at St. Lawrence Central., while at St Lawrence Central he coached basketball for 20 yrs.

Mr. Smith married Jean Adler Oct 14, 1955 in Bronxville, NY.

He was a member of the American Legion Post 79,Massena Elks Lodge B.P.O.E # 1702, NYS Retired Teachers' Association. Past member of the Massena Country Club..

He was an avid golfer and loved traveling.

Barbara E. Sweet

There will no public calling hours and services for Barbara E. Sweet. 85 of 38 Clinton St, Waddington.

Miss Sweet died Sunday evening at Claxton Hepburn Hospital where she had been a patient for the past week.

Interment will be in Brookside Cemetery, Waddington.

Surviving Barbara E. Sweet is a sister and brother: Faye Rice of Henderson,NY Herbert Sweet of Norwood,NY, several neices and nephews.

She was predeceased by a brother Arthur Sweet. Born December 15, 1922 in Waddington at the family home the daughter and Allen and Lucy ( Gray) Sweet.

A graduate of Waddington High School and Syracuse University.

At one time she was employed at the St. Lawrence County Clerk's Office before moving to Syacuse where she attended night school at Syracuse while working at General Electric. S

he later moved to Watertown where she was employed at Flower Memorial Library as a librarian retiring in 1988 and returning to Waddington.

Eunice B. Downer

Funeral services for Eunice B. Downer, 79 formerly of Grasmere Terrace,Massena will be  Thursday 10:00 am at the Phillips Memorial Home,Massena. Interment will be in Calvary Cemetery,  Massena.

Calling hours will be Wednesday 2-4  and 7-9 pm at the Phillips Memorial Home.

Mrs. Downer died Monday morning (May 26, 2008 ) at the St. Regis Nursing Home where she had been a resident for the past year.

Surviving Eunice B. Downer are two daughters and a son: Mrs. Jewrry   (Victoria) Stone of Helena, Mrs. Jesse ( Tina ) Tyo of Louisville, Russel and his wife Suzu Ware of Averil Park, NY. six grandchildren, five grandchildren, a brother Walter Recore of Fulton, a sister Margaret Downer of Troy, several neices and nephews.

She was predeceased by three sons, Teddy and Frederick Downer, Ricky Ware and a grandson Duane Garth II.

A marriage to Ernest Downer ended in divorce.

At one time Mrs. Downer was a nurse's aide at the highland Nursing home and did cleaning for various businesses. She enjoyed tadding, crocheting, baking and cooking for her family.

Mary Parlow Squires

Mary Parlow Squires, 77 of 41 Churchill Ave, Massena, NY died Tuesday evening at home under the loving  care of her family and Hospice. Mrs. Squires had been in ill health for the past month.

Calling hours will be held Friday from 2-4 and 7-9 pm at the Phillips Memorial Home, Massena. Funeral services will be Saturday at 11:00 AM at the First Methodist Church with the Pastor Judith Van Kennen of the Emmanuel Congregational Church presiding.  Interment will be in Pine Grove Cemetery, Massena. Honorary Pallbearers will be Sally Fairbanks, Charmaine Foley, Eileen Walsh, Muriel Feeney, Mary Hennessy. 

Memorials may be made to Hospice & Palliative Care of St.Lawrence Valley, Massena Humane Society or  Emmanuel Congregrational Church Memorial Fund.

Surviving Mary Parlow Squires is her husband of 54 yrs Robert B, two sons and a daughter: Robert P. and wife Patty of Royal Palm Beach, Fl, David E. of Massena, Mrs John  (Jane ) Ward of Saranac Lake, agrandson Liam of Saranac Lake, a brother: Richard Parlow of Ft. Wayne,In. and her faithful companiondog "Zipper".

Born June 9, 1930 in Postdam, NY the daughter of Clarence and Jane (Simpkins) Parlow.

A graduate of Potsdam High School, earned an Associate Degree in Food Administration at RIT. Rochester.

She married Robert B. Squires September 19, 1953 at the Presbyterian Church, Potsdam.

Mrs. Squires was an active member of the Nihanawate Chapter DAR 1115NY. She was a member of the Massena Memorial Hospital Auxiliary for many years. She enjoyed playing bridge, and was an avid lover of dogs. She enjoyed gardening, and shopping.

Mrs. Squires and her husband Robert spent many years during the summer months boating in the Thousand Islands region.

Anthony "Tony" A. Manganelli

Funeral services with full Military Honors for Anthony "Tony" A. Manganelli, 86, of 34 Amherst Road Massena, NY will be held Monday at 10:00 AM at the Church of the Sacred Heart in Massena, with Rev. Donald J Manfred  presiding.   Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery in Massena.

Calling hours will be held Sunday from 2-4 & 7-9 PM at the Phillips Memorial Home in Massena.

Mr. Manganelli died Thursday (May 29, 2008), at St. Regis Nursing Home in Massena,, NY.

He is survived by his wife Ellen Manganelli; anda sister Josephine Perotti of Hassbroucki Heights, NJ. Several nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by a brother Angelo Manganelli. 

Anthony was born January 11, 1922 in Brooklyn, NY, the son of  Eugonio and Carmela (Scanelli) Manganelli. Following graduation he worked for Central Saw Co. in Brooklyn, he entered the US Army during WW II where he was a prisoner of war in Europe, following discharge he returned to the saw company until 1952.

He married  Ellen M. Romeo on June 24, 1951 at Calvary Church in Brooklyn, NY.

He worked for Greco Manufacturing for 11 years, he later worked for the US Postal Service in Brooklyn, NY and retired in 1985. After his retirement he and his wife moved to Massena in 1985.

He will be best remembered by all who loved him for his wonderful sense of humor and generous heart. He was an avid NY Yankee fan. He enjoyed doing carpentary work. 

He  was a member of the American Legion Post #79, V.F.W. Post # 1143, life time member of POW(American Prisoner of Wars).
