Several years ago, she was a "regular" at my oil painting classes, most frequently those that I conducted at the Memory Lane Shop in Potsdam. She truly enjoyed painting and our group had a great time together, sharing our love of art. Though it's been quite some time since we last met with her, my wife and I both remember her distinctly and fondly. We are blessed to have known her. It is so painful to see Lori lying in a bed in her living room, floating in & out of awakeness...awareness, the price she willingly pays to not feel the intense pain of cracked and brittle bones and shifted vertebrae...oh god, I can only imagine how she is suffering. Surrounding all this 'beyond reason' illness, this dying body, is a world of love and gentleness and constant caring and caresses and touching, pouring out of her children, her sisters her friends and Jim, her knight, her caregiver, her sweetheart. The grand children are in and out, teasing grandpa...touching grandma...playing, just being. The tiny house (cottage) is filled to bursting with chatter and people and food and this constant hum of love...a joyous buzz. How comforting this must be for her. To be encircled by her loved ones. She is absolutely aware of all of this. Lori knows me and we kissand hug and I hold her hand and kiss her hand & she says 'I don't know why this is happening but my prayers are carrying me now'....where does that kind of faith come from? Surrender? Acceptance? Resolve...in it's greatest form; faith is Lori's choice. She is close to the end...a few days, a few moments? Maybe not even that. I sit at the foot of her bed, stroking her feet for the longest time, wishing I could heal her...wishing I had this magic in my hands that would just get her up , walking and new. I suppose everyone wishes the same as they watch her barely moving body. Her hands grasp and hold tight as I kiss her brow, her eyes are closed but she is saying 'thank you for coming, I love you' and she holds on to my hand until I loosen my grip. It has been a long, hard row for her...and she is ready and waiting for the next step. Those few hours spent at her bedside, in her home, with her dear ones, ripped me out of myself to a calm, love filled space where I felt comforted and so blessed to be a part of my sweet friend's goodbye.
